Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “3CRU” by Guerrieri Rizzardi

Produced from hand-selected grapes grown on the Rizzardi family estate in Negrar di Valpolicella, this Amarone is the result of careful vineyard management and traditional winemaking. The grapes—Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Barbera, and Merlot—are naturally dried in small crates for several months in historic drying rooms before fermentation.

Vineyards in Valpolicella
The estate covers 25 hectares in Negrar, one of the five municipalities that make up the Valpolicella Classica DOC. Unlike the broader Valpolicella appellation, only five out of 19 municipalities belong to the Classica designation. The vineyards, divided into 25 parcels, reach up to 40 years of age, with vine density ranging from 1,600 to 5,000 plants per hectare.

Grape Varieties & Terroir
Only red grape varieties are grown on the estate, including Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Barbera, Merlot, and Sangiovese. The vineyards are situated on hillsides at elevations between 190 and 300 meters above sea level. The soil is primarily clay-based with a significant presence of limestone, contributing to the structure and complexity of the wines.

Winemaking & Aging
After a natural drying period lasting three to five months, fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 12 months in small oak barrels, followed by an additional 24 months in larger 25- and 50-hectoliter barrels.

Tasting Notes & Pairing Suggestions
This Amarone is deep and layered, with aromas of dark berries, dried fruit, and warm spices. The texture is silky, with a long and balanced finish. Its fresh style makes it a great match for hearty stews, game dishes, and grilled meats.

Best enjoyed from around four years after harvest, with the potential to evolve over a decade or more.

About Guerrieri Rizzardi

Guerrieri Rizzardi is a historic, family-run winery with origins dating back to the 15th century. The estate brings together the legacies of two noble families who played a key role in the development of winemaking in the Veneto region. With vineyards across Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Soave, the winery produces estate-grown wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of these classic regions.

For centuries, the estate has evolved from mixed agriculture to a dedicated focus on viticulture, emphasizing the relationship between soil, climate, and grape variety. The vineyards are planted with both traditional and international grapes, carefully chosen based on soil composition and microclimate. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Barbera, and Sangiovese form the foundation of the Valpolicella wines, while Bardolino and Soave bring in additional varietal diversity. The estate follows sustainable vineyard practices, with precise pruning and yield control to maintain quality.

Grapes are vinified in three separate cellars, one in each region, to ensure minimal transport and preserve freshness. The winery was among the first in Italy to apply the "Cru" concept, highlighting the significance of individual vineyard sites in defining quality. Over the years, the Rizzardi family has balanced tradition with innovation, expanding their vineyards while maintaining full control over the production process, from vine to bottle.

Beyond winemaking, Guerrieri Rizzardi has also developed a strong presence in hospitality and tourism. Historic sites such as Villa Rizzardi and the renowned Pojega Garden in Valpolicella are part of the estate, offering visitors a connection to the winery’s long history. Today, the family continues to refine their approach, blending generations of expertise with modern techniques to create wines that reflect both their heritage and the land they cultivate.
