Amarone and Valpolicella Wines by Tommasi
At the risk of coming over all Tammy Wynette, there is a sense in which you can’t spell the word ‘Amarone’ without the letters ‘T-O-M-M-A-S-I’. For over a century this family owned, family run Valpolicella institution has been crafting some of the top wines in the region, even before the Amarone style was a glint in Adelino Lucchese’s eye. Today they continue to expand and experiment, inside and outside of Valpolicella, but make no mistake – the name Tommasi is a byword for the classic wine of the region, traditional in the best sense of the word, standard-bearers for place and identity.
It is this sense that sets them apart – despite having hundreds of hectares under vine, including over a hundred in Valpolicella Classica itself, Tommasi are known for their unique, terroir-expressive wines, their expert balancing of place and craft, their ability to stand back and let the wine do the talking. Their vineyards in the Classica area are justly all celebrated, from Conca d’Oro to La Groletta, and perhaps especially in Ca’ Florian, the first site purchased by founders Giacomo Battisti Tommasi and his wife Augusta Tommasi in 1902, and today that rarest of things, the producer of a single-vintage Amarone!
As they continue to grow today, under the management of the fourth generation of the family, moving into pastures new and working wonders with lesser-known varietals like the Luganese white turbiana grape, rest assured they will not forget their home soil, home vines, and home wine. Expect quality and conscientiousness with Tommasi, but above all, expect to be transported.
