Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Monte la Parte” by Piccoli
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Monte La Parte” by Piccoli is a remarkable example of Italian winemaking craftsmanship, showcasing a deep commitment to tradition and quality. Originating from the esteemed Valpolicella region, an area synonymous with exceptional wines, this offering from the Piccoli family is a testament to their dedication to both tradition and innovation.
Vinification Process: The selection of the best grape clusters for “Monte La Parte” involves a careful, rigorous process. These selected grapes are then placed in a fruttaio, a traditional drying room, where they undergo a natural drying process without any artificial climate control. This process, spanning over three months, leads to a significant reduction in grape weight, by up to 35%. Following this, the grapes are cold macerated for 15 days, succeeded by a slow fermentation process in stainless steel tanks. This fermentation is meticulously controlled to ensure temperatures do not exceed 20°C, with soft remontage and delestage techniques employed to maximize the extraction of polyphenolic compounds.
Aging Technique: The refinement of “Monte La Parte” takes place in 30 hl French oak barrels for a minimum of five years, a process that significantly contributes to the wine’s depth and complexity. After aging in oak, the wine is transferred to stainless steel tanks for several more months to further develop its unique profile. Before release, the wine is bottle-aged for an additional year, allowing its flavors to fully integrate and mature.
Culinary Pairings: This robust wine is an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with red meats and game, enhancing the flavors of these hearty dishes. It also complements a range of cheeses, from matured to semi-matured, as well as Salame, creating a delightful gastronomic experience.
Wine Characteristics:
– Color: The “Monte La Parte” boasts a rich red ruby color, with elegant shades of orange.
– Aroma: The bouquet reveals an array of ripe fruit aromas, including black cherry, raspberry, and plum, complemented by subtle notes of mint and eucalyptus.
– Taste: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, offering a harmony of elegant tannins and fruity notes. Flavors of red berries blend seamlessly with nuances of liquorice and tobacco, resulting in a dense, complex, and persistently memorable aftertaste.

Veronica and Alice oversee a hillside estate their family has tended for more than sixty years, applying a “zero‑centimetre” philosophy, every decision begins with the soil beneath their feet. Each bunch is clipped by hand; the best are laid in small crates on the loft’s open floor, where mountain air slowly dries the grapes for Amarone and Recioto.
The cellar itself is an old tuff quarry carved into rock. Its natural insulation keeps temperature and humidity steady, so fermentation can proceed cool and clean in stainless‑steel tanks, never above 20 °C. Gravity moves must and skins gently, preserving the grapes’ own aromas. After a brief rest in steel, wines mature in medium and large French oak for anywhere from one to ten years, gaining depth through slow micro‑oxygenation.
Above the quarry a green roof of vines crowns the structure, uniting vineyard and winery and reducing environmental impact. Guided by the example of their parents, Daniela and Tiziano, the sisters craft Valpolicella wines that honour local varieties, the limestone‑rich slopes, and a tradition of patience that begins long before harvest and ends only when a bottle is opened.
