Vintage 2015Exceptional vintage
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An exceptional year. A hot, dry summer and an early harvest of very healthy grapes.
A year of extremes: record heat and little rain, with healthy grapes and an early harvest.
The winter was warm, and the following months set twenty year records for maximum temperatures, July above all. April and July were very dry. Flowering came early, in late May and early June, and the heat of July and August did not slow ripening. The hot, dry weather kept downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis away, while careful vineyard work eased the stress on the vines. Harvest from about 10 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Marta Galli” by Le Ragose
The Amarone Classico Riserva “Marta Galli” is derived from an exceptional selection of grapes. The refinement of the product is achieved through the use of French oak barrels to produce distinct organoleptic characteristics, differentiating it from the traditional product, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Docg.
During the harvest, only bunches of grapes that are not too close together are collected to facilitate air circulation for better drying. These bunches are carefully handpicked in the vineyard during September and placed on flat plastic trays to dry until January, with controlled humidity and temperature. This process is referred to as “Appassimento.”
After destemming, the grapes undergo red vinification, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks for approximately 20-30 days. Aging takes place in oak barrels, which are a mix of Allier, Troncais, and Vosges, with 30% being new and the remaining 70% used. The wine is aged for 7/8 years before bottling, which is then done for at least 12 months.
Tasting notes reveal that the wine is intense, exceptionally powerful, and rich in tannins, with hints of black cherry. It is hot, strong, full, and velvety, with a pleasantly bitter taste, while also remaining elegant and well balanced.

Le Ragose sits at one of the highest points in Valpolicella, just north of Verona, where the vineyards rise above the fog line. This altitude, combined with excellent sunlight and low humidity, creates ideal conditions for grape varieties used in Amarone and Valpolicella, especially for the traditional appassimento drying process.
In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta took over the abandoned 70-acre estate, drawn by the potential of its hillside terrain. Their focus was clear: working with nature, favoring elevation and drainage, and avoiding irrigation. The estate now includes 40 acres of terraced vineyards, planted on soils rich in clay, magnesium, calcium, and iron, with tufaceous rock below. The steep slopes mean all vineyard work is done manually, and the estate continues to rely exclusively on natural rainfall.
The Galli family has remained true to a balanced approach, respecting traditional methods while making thoughtful updates. The wines age primarily in large Slavonian oak casks, with occasional use of French tonneaux from Allier and Tronçais to support the wine without masking its character.
Marta Galli gained wide recognition for her influence in Valpolicella, earning the title “Wine Maker of the World” in 1990 for her role in restoring the area’s standing and supporting its DOC recognition. She also co-founded Le Donne del Vino, an international network of women in wine, and contributed to VIDE, an association of small, independent Italian producers.
Today, Le Ragose is run by Paolo and Marco Galli, together with Marta, Paolo’s daughter. Their approach continues to prioritize quality over quantity, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Herbicides are no longer used, compost is made on-site, and pest control is managed with low-impact methods. The estate adheres to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which supports responsible farming practices.
Historical documents confirm grape growing on this land for over 400 years. With deep roots and a clear direction, Le Ragose continues to evolve, staying grounded in its values, respect for place, minimal impact on the environment, and producing wines that stay true to the character of Valpolicella.
