Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year, one of the best of its decade. A hot summer and a small harvest of top grapes.
One of the best years of the decade: a smaller crop of excellent quality.
A cold autumn and winter with plenty of rain refilled the soils. Budbreak came about 7 days earlier than in 2008, and flowering very early. Heavy rain and some hail in early July did no real damage. August was torrid, comparable only to 2003. September brought wide swings between day and night and very little rain, ideal for picking, which began on 9 September.

Dal Forno Winery boasts four generations of viticulturists and manages a splendid estate spanning approximately 25 hectares in the picturesque Illasi hills. The mild and breezy climate, influenced by the proximity to Lake Garda, along with the predominantly calcareous soils, have long provided the perfect habitat for indigenous red grape varieties such as Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. The turning point for the winery came with the encounter of Giuseppe Quintarelli, another historical figure in Valpolicella wine. Romano Dal Forno Winery represents a dynamic meeting point between time-honored winemaking methods and modern technological advances in Valpolicella. The winery builds on an ancient tradition of using semi-dried grapes, a practice that has defined the region’s style for centuries, while incorporating innovative techniques that ensure each vintage is both robust and balanced. Romano Dal Forno began his career within his family’s vineyard before choosing to produce wine directly from his own estate in the Illasi hills, where a climate influenced by Lake Garda and predominantly calcareous soils creates optimal conditions for the indigenous red grape varieties.
A significant turning point in his early career was his encounter with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a pivotal figure in Valpolicella winemaking. Under Quintarelli’s guidance, Dal Forno adopted advanced methods in yield management and grape selection. This relationship provided him with valuable insights into both traditional practices and the benefits of adopting new techniques, which he then applied to his own production. The interplay between Quintarelli’s conventional approach and Dal Forno’s readiness to incorporate innovative processes has helped form a distinctive style of Amarone that continues to set high standards in the region.
At the winery, a strict selection process is employed to ensure that only the best grapes, subjected to a dual sorting procedure before and after the drying phase, are used in the vinification process. In addition, Dal Forno’s use of smaller oak barrels allows for a faster and more controlled aging process compared to traditional large wooden barrels. This method not only refines the structure of the wine but also preserves the concentrated flavor derived from the grapes.
Over the years, the winery has embraced advancements such as improved air circulation during grape drying and precise temperature controls during fermentation. These technological improvements work in harmony with age-old techniques to ensure each wine maintains a consistent profile, rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and subtle spice notes that clearly express the character of Valpolicella.
Romano Dal Forno’s innovative approach has had a lasting impact on the Amarone scene, influencing many producers in the region to reconsider established methods. Today, his winery stands as a model of how historical practices and modern technology can work together to produce wines that are both robust and refined, consistently representing the unique character of Valpolicella while pushing the limits of what Amarone can become.
