A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.
Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2022
Zenato Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2022 is produced from vineyards at the Costalunga estate in the historic Valpolicella Classica zone, at 250 to 300 metres above sea level on mostly clay and calcareous soils rich in rock fragments. The blend is 85% Corvina Veronese, 10% Rondinella and 5% Corvinone, trained on the Guyot system and harvested by hand at a yield of around 10 tonnes per hectare. After de-stemming, the grapes undergo traditional maceration for 10 to 12 days in stainless steel fermenters, followed by gentle pressing at the end of alcoholic fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak casks for approximately 12 months before bottling. The Superiore designation requires a minimum of one year of ageing and a slightly elevated minimum alcohol level compared to the base Valpolicella DOC.
