Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Warm weather, plenty of water and a balanced harvest.
A warm year with good water reserves, balanced ripening and a slightly early harvest.
Spring was cold at first, then warm, with repeated spells of cold air and a lot of rain in the hills. Early summer was cool and unstable; from late July it turned hot, with local storms. Strong storms in early September caused local damage, with landslides and flooding in some vineyards. Harvest began on 10 September, four days ahead of the average, with good sugar, balanced acidity and heavier berries thanks to plenty of water.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Fieramonte” by Allegrini
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Fieramonte” from the Veneto region, specifically Valpolicella Classica in Fumane, Verona, is a prestigious wine made from 45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, and 5% Oseleta. The vineyard is situated at an average altitude of 415 meters (1411 feet) above sea level with a southeast exposure, which ensures optimal ripening of the grapes. The soil is loose and pebbly, rich in stony matter with significant magnesium and iron content, and a low level of clay. The vines are trained using the Double Guyot system, with an average age of 18 years and a vineyard density of 4545 vines per hectare (1840 vines per acre).
The grapes are manually selected in mid-September and undergo a natural partial drying process (Appassimento) in the drying facility, resulting in a 40-50% weight reduction. In January, the grapes are de-stemmed and softly pressed, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine is aged for 48 months in French oak barriques, blended for 6 months, and further aged in the bottle for approximately 1 year.
With an alcohol content of 16.77% Vol, total acidity of 6.30 g/l, residual sugars of 3.6 g/l, dry extract of 41.3 g/l, and a pH of 3.50, this Amarone offers a complex bouquet of dark fruit, spice, coffee, and medicinal herbs. On the palate, it is decisive and powerful, with a balanced mouthfeel enriched by supple acidity. The wine should be served at 18°C (64°F) and the bottle opened an hour before drinking. It pairs beautifully with rich dishes, game, roasts, and mature cheeses.

A Family Tradition in Valpolicella
For generations, the Allegrini family has shaped winemaking in Valpolicella Classica, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. Their influence grew significantly in the 1960s, when Giovanni Allegrini introduced modern techniques that refined grape selection and improved viticulture practices. His work set the foundation for the winery’s evolution, and today, the estate is led by Francesco, Giovanni, Matteo, and Silvia Allegrini, carrying forward the family’s vision.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
Nestled between Verona and Lake Garda, Valpolicella is one of Italy’s most well-known wine regions. The name itself, derived from "val polis cellae," meaning "valley of many cellars", reflects its deep-rooted connection to winemaking. The heart of Valpolicella Classica, where Allegrini’s vineyards are located, spans the hills of Fumane, Sant’Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano, and Negrar. The area benefits from a mild climate and calcareous soils that date back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, providing ideal conditions for producing wines with complexity and structure.
Sustainable Practices
Since 2017, Allegrini has been awarded Biodiversity Friend certification, recognizing efforts to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Beyond vine cultivation, the estate protects local wildlife and natural habitats. In 2023, it added Beekeeping certification, further supporting biodiversity. Equalitas certification, achieved in 2019, ensures sustainability across the production chain, from environmental management to ethical sourcing. To minimize environmental impact, the winery monitors water usage and carbon emissions, adjusting vineyard practices to improve efficiency.
The Allegrini Family’s Influence
Giovanni Allegrini’s passion for winemaking laid the groundwork for what the estate has become today. Known for his keen intuition, he earned the nickname "the barrel spider", as he moved quickly between barrels, eager to share and refine his wines. After his passing in 1983, his children Franco, Walter, and Marilisa took over, each contributing to the winery’s continued growth. Today, Franco’s sons Francesco, Giovanni, and Matteo oversee winemaking, while Walter’s daughter Silvia focuses on sustainability projects.
