Critic scores for the 2020 vintage

Zenato’s classic expression of Amarone made from grapes grown on the Costalunga estate, their core and homeland vineyards. Stylistically weighty, as is characteristic, but also with signs of gentleness, lightness, and something ethereal and elegant. Marvellous stuff.

Bottle: 750ml
Vintage: 2020
Alcohol: 16,5%
Grapes: Corvina 80%, Rondinella 10%, Oseleta and Croatina 10%
Ageing: Refinement is generally carried out in oak barrels for at least 36 months.
Aromas: Classic Maraschino, but with a noticeable herbiness and spiciness, with a bay leaf and whole peppercorns kind of thing going on.

Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2020 by Zenato Winery

Zenato’s classic expression of Amarone made from grapes grown on the Costalunga estate, their core and homeland vineyards. Stylistically weighty, as is characteristic, but also with signs of gentleness, lightness, and something ethereal and elegant. Marvellous stuff.

Winemaking: the best grapes are hand-selected are dried in specially constructed boxes for an achingly-long four months, with crushing and a long on-skin fermentation not beginning until January. The wine is then aged in Slavonion-oak botti for 36 months, before spending a bit more time in bottle prior to release.

Assemblage: corvina, rondinella, oseleta and croatina in unknown percentages.

Soil: mainly limestone, with some cretaceous-era fossil presence.

Alcohol: 16.5%.

Colour: ruby to purple, opaque and dark.

Aroma: classic Maraschino, but with a noticeable herbiness and spiciness, with a bay leaf and whole peppercorns kind of thing going on.

Palate: like an iron fist in a velvet glove, full and fearsome but soft and velvety as well, with huge plummy fruit and a bit of black coffee and dark chocolate on the finish.

Ageability: this one usually has many years in it, a surprising acidity keeping it fresh through the years.

Pairing: Amarone can be a hard wine to pair due to its sheer power, but generally this one would respond well to rich, braised, slow-cooked meat like venison.

About Zenato

Zenato stands on 95 hectares split between two renowned areas: white-wine Lugana on the southern shore of Lake Garda and red-wine Valpolicella Classica in the Costalunga hills of Sant’Ambrogio. Sergio Zenato set the course in 1960, pairing modern techniques with a devotion to local grapes, Trebbiano di Lugana for fresh, mineral whites and Corvina, Rondinella, plus a touch of Oseleta for structured Valpolicella and Amarone.

The Santa Cristina estate in San Benedetto di Lugana yields expressive whites shaped by the lake’s mild climate and clay-rich soils. Forty kilometres east, Costalunga’s dry-stone terraces and well-drained marl give the family’s reds depth and length. Precise vineyard mapping, row orientation for optimum sunlight, and careful water management underscore a hands-on approach first outlined by Sergio and continued by his wife Carla and their children Alberto and Nadia.

Beyond Veneto, Zenato cultivates 3.8 hectares along the Via Bolgherese in Tuscany. Here Podere Prospero offers a personal take on Bolgheri DOC, blending Cabernet and Merlot grown on sandy, sea-breeze-cooled soils.

Across all sites, low-impact farming, selective harvesting, and measured cellar work aim to translate each plot’s character into the glass, an approach shaped by more than six decades of family vision and continuity.
