Carlo Ferragù
Amarone and Valpolicella Wines by Carlo Ferragù
Carlo Ferragù, along with his brothers Ornello and Angelo, represents the heart of the Ferragù estate winery—a place where tradition and modernity intertwine to create exquisite wines. Their family team, including Milena, Nicola, and Alessia, and external partners during harvest, play pivotal roles in their operation.
Housed in a structure of Romanic origin, with bold, solid stone walls, the winery skillfully combines ancient gear with the latest technologies. This harmonious blend of old and new is essential in producing their signature intense ruby-red wines with sublime flavors and full, persistent tastes.
Key to their process is the careful drying of grapes on the first floor, followed by a meticulous fermentation process in steel fermentines and tanks. The refinement stage exclusively uses 225-litre French and American oak casks, enhancing the flavor and taste of their products.
Their laboratory plays a critical role in determining the optimal harvesting period. The Ferragù estate is renowned for its high expertise in grape drying, considered a second harvest in the region. Grapes, selected during the first three weeks of October, are arranged on large perforated plastic plateaux, facilitating better ventilation and easier cleaning.
Covering 8 hectares of vineyards and a hectare of oil cultivation, the Ferragù estates are situated in Sorcè di Sopra, 220 meters above sea level. The winery itself is divided into two parts: the modern upper floor with essential equipment and the lower, older part, where silence and temperature control are paramount for refining their Amarone and Valpolicella.
Their meticulous process involves double green pruning, careful grape selection, over two months of drying resulting in a 40% weight loss, four years of aging in oak barriques, and a year in the bottle. This detailed attention at every stage ensures that the Ferragù wines not only reflect the character and personality of the estate but also embody Carlo’s passion, inviting wine lovers on a journey through quality with each sip.
