Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “De Buris” 2009

Valpolicella is a land of great wineries, mighty producers, famous names and landowners renowned throughout the world. It is also, of course, a land of small producers, single-plot landowners and, most enticingly for the connoisseur, cult wineries. De Buris is one such cult winery – every drop in every bottle has been virtually hand-squeezed, pored over, thought about, considered. This riserva is particularly noteworthy, coming as it does from what we consider to be a five-star vintage, producing something really special indeed.

Assemblage: corvina 65%, corvinone 24%, oseleta 5%, rondinella 6%.

Winemaking: from the La Groletta vineyard in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, ten hectares 250m above sea level made of clay and calcareous soil with a good component of limestone. Only the finest bunches are hand-selected and taken to the arele, where they are put through appassimento for 110 days. At the end of January the grapes are pressed, cryomacerated for 10 days and then fermented, for 30 days, in oak vats, with autochthonous yeasts. The wine is aged for 5 years is Slavonion oak casks of 15hl or 30hl, whereafter it is held back in bottle before release.

Alcohol: 15,9%

Colour: deep ruby.

Aroma: relatively restrained, remarkably fine fruit and spice notes, backed up by hints of liquorice and the darkest of chocolate.

Palate: powerful, yielding astonishing fruit and concentration, but with a streak of acidity holding the whole profile up on a taut wire. Integrated tannins carry it through to an immensely long finish.

Ageability: practically just having started, this wine will reward a lot of patience in the cellar.

About De Buris

De Buris arises from the expertise of the Tommasi Family and the skill of oenologist Giancarlo Tommasi, who have shaped a modern classic Amarone through talent, sensitivity, patience, and discipline. Considered akin to a symphony of fragrances, it evolves in harmony with the seasons and lunar phases, from the initial selection of grapes to their drying, fermentation, aging, blending, and bottling. Time runs through this project, carrying knowledge, determination, and a spirit of inclusion that has guided the Tommasi Family for generations.

At its core is a select parcel of just 1.9 hectares in the La Groletta vineyard, located at 250 meters altitude. Clay-limestone soils, breezes from Lake Garda, and the warm southwest sun come together here in a setting that has shaped Valpolicella wines for centuries. Ancient geological layers, Maiolica, Rosso Ammonitico, clay, silt, sand, and gravel, provide richness, nuanced aromas, and lively acidity. The name Valpolicella dates back to the 12th century, and these soils have long been recognized for producing grapes of singular character.

After a manual harvest beginning around September 10, the finest bunches are placed in crates of seven kilograms each and set on bamboo racks to air-dry for 110 days. The grapes are pressed in January after another careful evaluation, then they undergo a brief cryomaceration (approximately 10 days) followed by a slow fermentation (30 days) in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation takes place during the first year in Slavonian oak casks, and the wine matures for five more years in 15 to 30 hl casks in the old cellar of Villa De Buris, before resting further in bottles.

De Buris was conceived when the Tommasi family purchased the vines of La Groletta, a historic location for Amarone within Valpolicella Classica. This vision was completed in 2018, resulting in a wine that highlights the significance of time, weaving together a lasting connection between tradition and a contemporary sense of elegance.
