Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico by Villa Girardi
Villa Girardi’s Amarone della Valpolicella Classico embodies the tradition and expertise of a family-run winery founded in 1986 by Franco Tommasi. Nestled in the valley that connects San Pietro in Cariano with Fumane, in the heart of Valpolicella, this estate spans 30 hectares of vineyards, benefiting from the region’s limestone-rich soil and mild climate—ideal for cultivating the native grape varieties Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara.
The winery itself is housed in Villa Girardi, a classic Venetian villa designed by Luigi Trezza in the 1700s, surrounded by a lush park of ancient trees. These vineyards, set in the historical heartland of Valpolicella, are the birthplace of their Amarone, produced using traditional methods that include a three-month drying process and three years of aging in Slavonian oak casks.
This Amarone is a deep ruby-red wine with purplish highlights. The nose is elegant and intense, offering notes of ripe cherries and plums, while the palate is full-bodied, velvety, and complex, showcasing the hallmark richness of dried grapes. With an alcohol content of 15%, it is best enjoyed at 18-20°C and pairs beautifully with game, slow-cooked meats, and mature cheeses. It’s also perfect for savoring during long conversations, a wine that reflects the heritage and attention to detail that Villa Girardi has cultivated for generations.

Villa Girardi was founded in 1986 by Franco Tommasi and lies between San Pietro in Cariano and Fumane in Valpolicella, northwest of Verona. This historic 18th-century Venetian villa, designed by Luigi Trezza, is surrounded by thirty hectares of limestone-rich land ideal for growing Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara.
A hallmark of Valpolicella is the traditional appassimento procedure, which plays a key role in producing Amarone and other full-bodied wines. Select grape clusters are arranged on racks in airy lofts for several months, gradually losing water content while concentrating natural sugars and aromas. This controlled drying phase results in intense color, flavor, and character.
Once the grapes have reached the desired stage, they move to the Bottaia, the winery’s prized cellar. Here, wines rest in carefully managed conditions to stabilize and develop further complexity before bottling. Modern equipment works in concert with time-honored practices, ensuring consistent fermentation and maturation. Villa Girardi maintains a balance between respect for centuries-old methods and the adoption of thoughtful innovations, underscoring the winery’s focus on quality in every bottle.
