Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. An early season, sunny and breezy, with fully ripe grapes.
An early year with fully ripe, very healthy grapes and normal yields.
A mild, dry winter brought budbreak about 20 days early, still about 15 days ahead at flowering. Rain in May and June came at the right time. Hail on 30 August hit some areas, but most of the territory was spared. Picking began on 10 September in stable, sunny, breezy weather with wide swings between day and night, ideal for ripening and for choosing the bunches to dry.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico “TB” 2007 by Tommaso Bussola
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico “TB” is one of Tommaso Bussola’s signature reds, a wine that brings together tradition and taste. It blends 35% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, each variety adding to its character.
The grapes grow on the sunlit hills near Negrar di Valpolicella, at altitudes between 280 and 450 metres above sea level. The vines, from 10 to 50 years old, are tended with both the Pergola Veronese and Guyot training systems at a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. Their south-east and south-west exposure gives the fruit the long hours of sunlight it needs to ripen fully.
Picking starts in mid-September with a careful selection of bunches. After harvest the grapes move to the Fruttaio, where they dry naturally on plastic plateaux for four months. In January they are sorted again, pressed and transferred to tanks, where fermentation begins with selected yeasts and runs for 50 days with regular pumping over and dรฉlestage to build depth and structure. The wine then settles in steel tanks and wooden barrels, where it finishes fermenting and begins its long rest.
The Amarone Classico ages for 48 months in a mix of 55% twice used 500 litre tonneaux, 30% in 225 litre barriques and 15% in 25 hectolitre casks, bringing oak and fruit into balance and giving the wine real richness and depth. After this it is bottled and rests for a further six months before release. Yearly production is held to around 20,000 bottles, so each one is hard to come by.
A full, deep read of Valpolicella, the Amarone Classico “TB” by Tommaso Bussola is a wine for those who already know their reds and for anyone keen to get to know them.

Tommaso Bussola began his work in winemaking in 1977, taking over his uncle Giuseppeโs small winery in Valpolicella Classica. With a sharp focus and a strong-willed approach, he initially followed local traditions, producing wines under the โBGโ label. Over time, he sought to refine his methods, leading to a turning point in 1983 when he personally selected the grapes for his first Amarone and Recioto.
A new phase began in the early 1990s with the construction of a new cellar and the use of barriques, allowing for a carefully managed aging process. This shift led to the creation of the โTBโ label, marking a commitment to precision and quality that is now recognized beyond Italy.
In 1995, Tommasoโs wife, Daniela, became an integral part of the winery, and in 2005, their sons, Paolo and Giuseppe, followed. Today, the family continues to uphold Valpolicellaโs long-standing winemaking traditions while refining their approach with each vintage.
Winemaking Approach
Attention to detail begins in the vineyard, where grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, from those destined for drying to those pressed immediately. The winery continuously works to refine its methods, adapting techniques in both the vineyard and cellar to bring out the best in each harvest.
Sustainability plays a key role in their philosophy, with natural methods used to maintain soil health and manage pests. By working closely with the land and respecting the natural balance of the vines, the Bussola family produces wines that reflect both their region and their commitment to continuous improvement.
