Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico by Le Ragose

The fourtieth anniversary for Le Ragose was also one of the great vintages of modern times for the Valpolicella region. Ageing well and with many years yet to go, this is not just a Classico, but a true classic.

Winemaking: hand-harvested grapes are aged on a plastic sheet for drying. The wine is fermented by indigenous yeasts in stainless steel for about a month, resting for much of the year before spending at least 7 years in Slavonian oak botti prior to bottling.

Assemblage: corvina 50%, rondinella 20%, corvinone 10%, and others.

Soil: principally clay, with some limestone.

Alcohol: 16%.

Colour: translucent, browning violet.

Aroma: concentrated blackberries and blackcurrants, hints of cocoa, dried tobacco leaf, forest floor.

Palate: continues to carry great power and purity of fruit, but has gained subtle and complex tertiary flavours, from rich dark chocolate to notes of walnuts and hazelnuts, and subtly balancing acidity.

Ageability: one decade in, it has at least another one left and possibly more.

Pairing: special-occasion food, the bigger the better (from rich meat stews to red wine risotto), and has the fruity intensity to even match up to certain desserts!

About Le Ragose

Le Ragose sits at one of the highest points in Valpolicella, just north of Verona, where the vineyards rise above the fog line. This altitude, combined with excellent sunlight and low humidity, creates ideal conditions for grape varieties used in Amarone and Valpolicella, especially for the traditional appassimento drying process.

In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta took over the abandoned 70-acre estate, drawn by the potential of its hillside terrain. Their focus was clear: working with nature, favoring elevation and drainage, and avoiding irrigation. The estate now includes 40 acres of terraced vineyards, planted on soils rich in clay, magnesium, calcium, and iron, with tufaceous rock below. The steep slopes mean all vineyard work is done manually, and the estate continues to rely exclusively on natural rainfall.

The Galli family has remained true to a balanced approach, respecting traditional methods while making thoughtful updates. The wines age primarily in large Slavonian oak casks, with occasional use of French tonneaux from Allier and Tronรงais to support the wine without masking its character.

Marta Galli gained wide recognition for her influence in Valpolicella, earning the title โ€œWine Maker of the Worldโ€ in 1990 for her role in restoring the areaโ€™s standing and supporting its DOC recognition. She also co-founded Le Donne del Vino, an international network of women in wine, and contributed to VIDE, an association of small, independent Italian producers.

Today, Le Ragose is run by Paolo and Marco Galli, together with Marta, Paoloโ€™s daughter. Their approach continues to prioritize quality over quantity, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Herbicides are no longer used, compost is made on-site, and pest control is managed with low-impact methods. The estate adheres to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which supports responsible farming practices.

Historical documents confirm grape growing on this land for over 400 years. With deep roots and a clear direction, Le Ragose continues to evolve, staying grounded in its values, respect for place, minimal impact on the environment, and producing wines that stay true to the character of Valpolicella.
