Description

Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “Le Sassine” by Le Ragose

Unveiling a complex tapestry of flavors and aromas, Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore “Le Sassine” from the acclaimed Le Ragose estate in Negrar, north of Verona, epitomizes the best of Italian winemaking tradition. This wine embodies the unique terroir of its origins and the skillful human touch that elevates it to its eloquent fullness.

The Vineyard

Nestled at the highest elevation of the Valpolicella zone, the vineyard occupies 3.5 hectares of sun-bathed slopes, enriched with red and brown clay overlaying Eocene limestone. The vines, both old and new, flourish here, gaining their unique richness from the southward exposure and complex soil composition. This optimal location provides an extraordinary playground for flavors to evolve.

The Wine

The blend is a symphony of 50% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 20% Corvinone, and 10% other old local varieties. Picked by hand and lightly air-dried for two to three weeks, the grapes undergo vinification in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. They are then aged for 24 to 36 months in 50Hl barrels of Slavonian oak.

Tasting Notes

The wine’s bouquet is an intriguing dance of black cherry, Christmas spice, and leather, further textured by notes of moist tobacco, honey, cedar, and barbecue smoke. It promises a smooth, lingering experience with a soft, velvety finish. Allow it some air to reveal its full array of complexities. With an alcohol content ranging between 14% to 14.5%, the wine showcases a balance of body and longevity.

Food Pairing

Designed to be savored with meat and wild game, this Valpolicella offers a culinary journey, especially when served at a temperature of 18°C to 20°C.

The Winery: Le Ragose

The Le Ragose estate has a rich history, brought back to life in 1969 by enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife, Marta, after years of abandonment. With a vision to restore Valpolicella to its deserved glory, they replanted the vineyards, integrating age-old natural methods with modern-day ingenuity. Their children and grandchildren continue to uphold these principles, with Marta Galli gaining the title of “Wine Maker of the World” in 1990 and influencing the DOC designation for Valpolicella wines.

The Philosophy

Le Ragose stays true to its vision, emphasizing the quality derived from the particular location and people who craft the wine. With careful hand-picking, natural drying methods, and meticulous aging, each bottle reflects the unique character of the estate and the Valpolicella region.

Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore “Le Sassine” is not just a bottle of wine; it’s a narrative of land, history, and unyielding passion for quality. A treasure in any wine collection, it speaks volumes about the Italian tradition of wine-making.

About Le Ragose

Le Ragose sits at one of the highest points in Valpolicella, just north of Verona, where the vineyards rise above the fog line. This altitude, combined with excellent sunlight and low humidity, creates ideal conditions for grape varieties used in Amarone and Valpolicella, especially for the traditional appassimento drying process.

In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta took over the abandoned 70-acre estate, drawn by the potential of its hillside terrain. Their focus was clear: working with nature, favoring elevation and drainage, and avoiding irrigation. The estate now includes 40 acres of terraced vineyards, planted on soils rich in clay, magnesium, calcium, and iron, with tufaceous rock below. The steep slopes mean all vineyard work is done manually, and the estate continues to rely exclusively on natural rainfall.

The Galli family has remained true to a balanced approach, respecting traditional methods while making thoughtful updates. The wines age primarily in large Slavonian oak casks, with occasional use of French tonneaux from Allier and Tronçais to support the wine without masking its character.

Marta Galli gained wide recognition for her influence in Valpolicella, earning the title “Wine Maker of the World” in 1990 for her role in restoring the area’s standing and supporting its DOC recognition. She also co-founded Le Donne del Vino, an international network of women in wine, and contributed to VIDE, an association of small, independent Italian producers.

Today, Le Ragose is run by Paolo and Marco Galli, together with Marta, Paolo’s daughter. Their approach continues to prioritize quality over quantity, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Herbicides are no longer used, compost is made on-site, and pest control is managed with low-impact methods. The estate adheres to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which supports responsible farming practices.

Historical documents confirm grape growing on this land for over 400 years. With deep roots and a clear direction, Le Ragose continues to evolve, staying grounded in its values, respect for place, minimal impact on the environment, and producing wines that stay true to the character of Valpolicella.
