Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Collezione Pruviniano” by Domini Veneti
The Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore “Collezione Pruviniano” by Domini Veneti is a refined interpretation of one of the most beloved wines of the Valpolicella region. The Ripasso method was first developed in the 1960s, when winemakers began re-fermenting Valpolicella wine on the Amarone grape skins to enhance body, structure, and aromatic depth. The result was a style that bridges freshness and richness — a red wine with a strong connection to the local tradition.
The grapes come from a beautiful terraced vineyard supported by dry-stone walls in Prognol, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The vines, around fifteen years old, grow on silt, clay, and limestone soils and benefit from southeast and southwest exposure. Harvest takes place by hand in early October. After destemming, fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures with about ten days of skin contact. The wine then undergoes a second fermentation on the Amarone grape skins for around fifteen days, gaining intensity and aromatic complexity. Aging follows in oak and stainless steel for nine months, and the wine rests a further six months in bottle before release.
In the glass, the Ripasso “Pruviniano” displays a deep ruby-red color with light garnet reflections. The bouquet opens with aromas of cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum, followed by hints of oriental spices, dried fruit, and gentle toasted notes. On the palate, it is full and well-balanced, with smooth tannins, layered fruit, and a persistent, elegant finish marked by soft spice.
This wine combines the fruit-forward charm of Valpolicella with the richness imparted by Amarone’s dried grape skins. It pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, roasts, and hearty dishes that highlight its depth and texture.

Domìni Veneti traces its origins to 1933, when a group of local grape growers in Valpolicella formed the Cantina Sociale Valpolicella Negrar cooperative. Their aim was to protect the region’s vineyards and preserve its long-standing winemaking traditions. In 1936, an overlooked barrel of Recioto continued fermenting by mistake, transforming into the dry and aromatic red later named Amarone. This discovery sparked a new direction in Valpolicella winemaking.
By 1989, the cooperative launched Domìni Veneti as a focused line of premium selections, drawing its name from the historical period when the region belonged to the Republic of Venice. Today, the winery draws on decades of local know-how and a fortunate blend of soil and climate. Every step, from tending vines to cellar practices, respects nature’s own pace.
Red or white, sweet or dry, wines bearing the Domìni Veneti name arise from the Valpolicella Classica zone and other Veronese areas. Amarone stands out as the so-called King of Valpolicella, born from that accidental moment in 1936. Recioto remains a sweet red DOCG, prized for its deep hue and prolonged grape-drying process. Valpolicella and Ripasso recall methods rooted in earlier generations, while Custoza, Lugana, Soave, Bardolino, Bardolino Chiaretto, and Raudii IGT round out the range of regional offerings.
What unites them all is an approach guided by human skill and the natural environment. The soil, vines, and climate work together to form wines that share a strong connection with the place they come from. This balance of tradition and thoughtful progress defines Domìni Veneti, a name that continues to champion authentic Valpolicella wines and the land that inspires them.
