Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A rainy spring, then a hot, sunny summer.
A cold, rainy spring and then a hot summer; careful vineyard work gave excellent results.
March and the spring were wet and cool: May alone had 18 rainy days and 229 mm, delaying flowering by about ten days. July and August were fine and hot. Hail struck the Classico zone on 24 August. From late August through September, wide swings between day and night built rich colour and tannin, and picking began at the usual time, from 20 September, with only scattered rain.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Azienda Agricola Carlo Ferragù
The Amarone della Valpolicella Docg by Carlo Ferragù is a true investment for the future, capable of aging for an extended period when properly stored in the cellar. It is a wine that embodies strength, precision, and elegance, and every organoleptic component is well-defined, from the varietal and primary aromas to the secondary and tertiary notes that emerge from the long aging process spent first in wood and then in glass.
To create this exceptional Amarone, Ferragù skillfully blends native red berry grape varieties, including Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta. These vines have an average age of 55 years and are rooted in a subsoil characterized by a medium texture, in vineyards located at about 240 meters above sea level. The grapes are hand-selected and then left to dry for 70 days before being pressed, destemmed, and fermented in steel containers. The wine then undergoes an important maturation phase, during which it spends 36 months in American oak barrels, followed by an additional 12 months in glass after bottling.
The Amarone della Valpolicella Ferragù has a strong body and distinct personality that make it a great accompaniment to hearty dishes such as aged cheese, venison, roast, braised meat, and stew. It is also a wine to be savored in solitude, perfect for contemplative moments. When uncorking a bottle of this level, happiness is truly within reach of the glass. It is an important label to share with enthusiasts of great Italian red wines.

Carlo Ferragù’s winery is a family enterprise based in Val d’Illasi, in the eastern part of Verona’s province. Carlo and his brothers, Ornello and Angelo, manage the entire production process with the help of close relatives, while additional workers lend support only during harvest. The cellar itself combines antique Romanesque stone walls, once used with traditional tools, and modern equipment that ensures precise control over every stage of winemaking.
Their vineyards cover about eight hectares planted with Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina, and Oseleta, plus roughly one hectare dedicated to olive trees. Grapes are carefully selected during harvest in early to mid-October, focusing on bunches with loosely spaced berries that allow steady air circulation. Those destined for Amarone spend more than two months drying in quiet lofts, losing up to forty percent of their original weight.
Once pressed and destemmed, the grapes undergo a brief cold maceration, followed by fermentation in steel tanks. Temperature is strictly regulated to draw out color, tannins, and aromatic elements from the skins. The resulting wine ages in French and American oak barriques, then rests further in bottle. This process shapes Valpolicella Superiore and Amarone with deep color, subtle fragrances, and an enduring finish.
Situated at about 240 meters above sea level, the estate benefits from plentiful sunlight and a mild climate that help grapes develop the maturity required for substantial red wines. The area’s seasonal rainfall in spring and autumn nourishes the vines without interfering with ripening. Carlo personally oversees each phase, applying rigorous checks from pruning and drying to final bottling. The outcome is an unmistakable wine that carries the character of Val d’Illasi and conveys the family’s passion for the land.
